Chicago, IL || Bolingbrook, ILFrom $150kmidAdded today

About this role

Formic seeks a Mechanical Project Engineer to design, develop, and commission electromechanical automation systems—including palletizing, case packing, and material handling solutions—from concept through production deployment. You'll blend CAD design, hands-on floor commissioning, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure Formic's robotics-as-a-service systems are reliable and scalable across its growing fleet.

What you'll do

  • Own mechanical design of automation systems and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) from concept through SolidWorks release and BOM management
  • Build, integrate, and commission electromechanical automation systems on the floor, validating performance and manufacturability
  • Develop and maintain organized CAD model structures, drawing hierarchies, revision control, and technical documentation (SOPs, work instructions, exploded diagrams)
  • Lead design iterations and troubleshoot multi-discipline failures to engineer permanent, root-cause solutions for deployed systems
  • Collaborate with Project Engineering, Software, and cross-functional teams to support product development, fleet upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Create training and enablement materials for deployment and operations teams

What they're looking for

  • SolidWorks 3D CAD design and modeling
  • Mechanical design and prototyping (palletizing, conveyor, material handling systems)
  • End-of-arm tooling (EOAT) design and implementation
  • Technical documentation, drawing release, and revision control
  • Electromechanical system integration and commissioning
  • Design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA)
  • Cross-functional collaboration and project management
  • Troubleshooting and root-cause analysis

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through your experience designing and releasing mechanical systems using SolidWorks—how do you manage model hierarchies and revision control?
  • Describe a time you designed end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) or custom automation equipment. What challenges did you face and how did you validate the design?
