Hermeus
Flight Software Engineering Intern (Simulation/Hardware-In-The-Loop) - Spring & Summer 2027
About this role
Hermeus seeks a Flight Software Engineering Intern to support development and testing of flight simulation and hardware-in-the-loop systems for high-speed aircraft. You'll work across avionics, software, and hardware integration, writing C++ simulation code and troubleshooting real hardware alongside a multidisciplinary mission systems team.
What you'll do
- Develop and support 6-DOF flight simulation including vehicle dynamics, sensor/actuator, and engine models
- Integrate and test hardware-in-the-loop systems with flight computers, avionics, sensors, and actuators
- Write simulation and test software in C++, with Python and MATLAB for modeling and tooling
- Troubleshoot hardware using schematics, pinouts, and bench tools like multimeters and oscilloscopes
- Build automation tooling for logging, playback, and repeatable testing
- Own simulation and integration tasks independently from setup through testing and troubleshooting
What they're looking for
- C++ programming
- Rigid-body dynamics and classical mechanics
- Linux command-line proficiency
- Hardware troubleshooting and schematic reading
- Bench tools (multimeter, oscilloscope, power supply)
- Python and/or MATLAB
- Flight dynamics or 6-DOF simulation
- Real-time or embedded systems
Benefits
- 5 days of sick leave
- Unpaid time off
- Weekly paid office lunches

Likely interview questions
- Walk us through a 6-DOF simulation or flight dynamics project you've worked on—what challenges did you encounter and how did you overcome them?
- Describe your experience with hardware-in-the-loop or software-in-the-loop testing. What was the most complex integration you've debugged?
