Forward Deployment Engineer (Residency Program)

Menlo Park, CAfulltimemidAdded today

About this role

Join HAI's Forward Deployed Engineer Residency Program to build autonomous clinical conversation systems that serve millions of patients. You'll develop sophisticated prompts, design integrations with healthcare systems, and ship production AI solutions while collaborating with engineers, clinicians, and product teams in a fast-moving healthcare environment.

What you'll do

  • Develop and refine advanced prompts using chain-of-thought, few-shot learning, and structured outputs for clinical agentic workflows
  • Design conversation logic and safety guardrails that balance clinical accuracy with patient experience
  • Build integrations connecting conversational agents to EHRs, scheduling systems, and telephony platforms via HL7/FHIR and REST APIs
  • Collaborate with clinicians and product managers to translate clinical requirements into conversation designs and conduct user testing
  • Conduct experiments measuring impact on clinical safety scores, patient satisfaction, and task completion rates
  • Partner with customer engineering teams during go-lives to debug integration issues and develop reusable patterns

What they're looking for

  • Python development with production-level code experience
  • LLM prompting techniques (chain-of-thought, few-shot, role-based, structured outputs)
  • RESTful API design and database integration
  • Backend frameworks (Flask, Django, FastAPI, or Spring Boot)
  • Healthcare data standards (HL7/FHIR)
  • Async patterns and error handling
  • Prompt engineering and experimentation
  • Version control and deployment procedures

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a recent project where you used advanced LLM prompting techniques—what techniques did you use and why did they work for that use case?
  • Tell us about a time you integrated a complex external system (EHR, database, or API) into production code. What challenges did you encounter and how did you solve them?
