Lightmatter
System Mechanical Design Engineer
About this role
Lightmatter seeks a hands-on mechanical design engineer to develop chassis and rack platforms for next-generation AI servers, focusing on thermal management, optical component integration, and manufacturability. You'll drive designs from CAD prototyping through contract manufacturer coordination in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.
What you'll do
- Design, test, and analyze mechanical hardware of moderate to high complexity, managing the full lifecycle from CAD to documentation
- Optimize thermal and structural packaging of optical, electrical, and related components for AI server platforms
- Lead design reviews, manage feedback and change requests, and drive cross-functional root-cause analyses
- Direct prototype builds and scale production by managing external contract manufacturers to ensure build-to-print quality
- Collaborate with program managers and supply chain teams to meet timelines and mitigate lead-time risks
- Support technical roadmap development and establish best practices for design and manufacturability
What they're looking for
- 3D CAD solid modeling (SolidWorks required)
- Thermal and structural testing and FEA analysis (ANSYS preferred)
- Heat transfer, strength of materials, and vibration design principles
- Electronics packaging and thermal management
- Supply chain and contract manufacturer coordination
- BOM generation and technical documentation
- 3D printing and rapid prototyping (preferred)
- Thermal simulation software (IcePak, Flotherm preferred)
