About this role
Lydian is seeking a Chemical Synthesis Engineer/Scientist Co-op to design and test novel catalyst materials for sustainable aviation fuel production. Over 6 months, you'll synthesize catalysts for high-temperature reactors, conduct bench-scale testing, scale formulations to larger substrates, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance materials toward commercial systems.
What you'll do
- Synthesize novel catalyst formulations using wet-chemical methods to meet high-temperature, long-duration operating requirements
- Conduct bench-scale reactor testing to evaluate catalyst activity, selectivity, and stability over time
- Scale promising formulations from lab synthesis to larger catalyst substrates and monolith coatings
- Perform advanced material characterization using XRD, electron microscopy, surface area analysis, and thermal techniques
- Collaborate with automotive suppliers and internal teams to develop scalable manufacturing and technology transfer processes
- Plan experiments independently, analyze data, and maintain detailed records of formulations and performance results
What they're looking for
- Chemical synthesis and wet lab techniques (impregnation, precipitation, calcination)
- Reaction kinetics, heat transfer, and mass transport fundamentals
- Heterogeneous catalysis concepts
- Experimental design, data analysis, and statistical methods
- Lab safety practices with furnaces and hazardous materials
- Material characterization techniques (XRD, microscopy, chemisorption)
- Technical writing and cross-functional communication
- Proactive problem-solving in developing environments
Benefits
- Paid engineering-focused co-op position
- Hands-on laboratory work with cutting-edge catalyst technology
- Collaborative technical team environment
- Meaningful work directly impacting climate solutions and company direction
