Neuralink
Software Engineer - HIL
About this role
Neuralink seeks a Software Engineer to develop and maintain the Hardware In the Loop (HIL) test system for its next-generation surgical robot. You'll build automated verification pipelines, write integration tests, and ensure production-ready robot firmware through comprehensive testing—enabling safe, scalable brain-computer interface surgery.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain HIL systems that exercise production surgical robots, controllers, and firmware with controlled inputs
- Write automated tests covering integration, timing, fault scenarios, and system bring-up
- Design and enforce pass/fail criteria, test coverage targets, and acceptance standards
- Integrate software-in-the-loop, HIL, and hardware acceptance tests into a unified CI pipeline with logging and reproducibility
- Own release-gating tests and close coverage gaps when issues escape simulation or testing
- Reproduce faults and debug async/concurrent systems across software and firmware layers
What they're looking for
- Rust programming
- Python for test automation and data analysis
- Hardware In the Loop (HIL) testing
- System-level verification on robotics or hardware platforms
- Debugging async and concurrent systems
- CI/CD pipeline development and Bazel
- Low-level hardware interaction (drivers, firmware, buses)
- RPC, telemetry, and timing failure diagnosis
Benefits
- Equity compensation (RSUs) for full-time employees
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
- Paid holidays and flexible time off
- Commuter benefits and meals provided
- 401(k) retirement plan
- Parental leave and opportunity to impact transformative brain-computer interface technology

Likely interview questions
- Walk us through your most complex HIL test setup—what hardware did you interface with, and how did you handle timing or synchronization challenges?
- Describe a situation where a bug escaped your test suite into production. How did you reproduce it, and what coverage gaps did you close?
