About this role
OpenAI seeks an Applied AI Engineer for its Government team in Washington, DC to serve as a technical leader partnering with public sector agencies to develop and deploy GenAI solutions. You'll combine strategic consulting with hands-on prototyping, guiding sophisticated government customers from ideation through production using OpenAI APIs and foundational models.
What you'll do
- Embed as technical lead with government customers to ideate and build novel GenAI applications on OpenAI APIs and foundational technologies
- Partner with senior stakeholders to identify high-value GenAI use cases and build comprehensive AI roadmaps for their organizations
- Build prototypes and deliver strategic guidance to accelerate customer time-to-value, often coordinating with systems integrators and implementation partners
- Manage relationships across customer and partner leadership to ensure successful deployment and scaling of applications
- Contribute to open-source developer resources and scale deployment engineering through knowledge sharing and best-practice documentation
- Provide high-signal feedback to Product, Engineering, and Research teams based on customer validation and synthesis

- Technical consulting with U.S. federal government agencies (7+ years required)
- GenAI and machine learning implementation and deployment experience
- Network and cloud architecture, including on-premises deployment knowledge
- Programming proficiency in Python, Go, or TypeScript
- Business and technical communication across diverse audiences
- End-to-end problem ownership and cross-functional collaboration
- Multi-project management and prioritization under throughput demands
- OpenAI API and foundational model expertise
