About this role

OpenAI seeks a Control Systems Software Engineer to design and implement real-time control algorithms for advanced robotic systems. You'll architect the full control stack from low-level actuators to whole-robot behavior, working hands-on with hardware in San Francisco.

What you'll do

  • Design and implement real-time control algorithms including motion control, feedback loops, state estimation, and actuator tuning
  • Define control architecture spanning low-level hardware interfaces through whole-robot behavior and policy
  • Characterize actuator and hardware parameters through experimentation, testing, and rigorous verification
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to integrate control logic with sensing and actuation
  • Work with machine learning engineers to implement reinforcement learning models into control systems
  • Inform mechanical and electrical design decisions to maximize system capability and flexibility

What they're looking for

  • Real-time control systems and classical control theory
  • Robot dynamics, state estimation, and motion planning
  • C++ or Rust for production-quality software
  • Hands-on robotics hardware debugging and commissioning
  • System dynamics and control parameter tuning
  • Simulation and real-world testing integration
  • Experience with manipulators or mobile robots
  • Reinforcement learning and modern learning-based approaches
