About this role

OpenAI's Future of Computing Research team seeks a machine learning engineer to develop multimodal perception and authentication systems that integrate visual, audio, and sensor data for consumer devices. You'll advance specialized and large-scale AI models while collaborating across hardware, firmware, and product teams to deploy research into real-world systems.

What you'll do

  • Research and develop multimodal perception and authentication methods across visual, audio, and sensing signals
  • Design data collection, training, and evaluation strategies for real-world robustness
  • Analyze model behavior, failure modes, and performance under deployment constraints
  • Integrate and validate capabilities in real-time or resource-constrained systems
  • Explore synergies between specialized perception models and larger multimodal models
  • Partner with hardware, firmware, software, and product teams to translate research into working products

What they're looking for

  • Computer vision or audio/speech machine learning
  • Multimodal learning and sensor fusion
  • Python and PyTorch
  • C++ or systems integration
  • Experimental design and model evaluation
  • Real-time systems and deployment optimization
  • Authentication, biometrics, or privacy-sensitive applications
  • Hardware integration and sensing constraints

Benefits

  • Work on cutting-edge multimodal AI research
  • Hybrid work arrangement (3 days per week in office, San Francisco)
  • Relocation assistance provided
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration with hardware and product teams
  • Opportunity to shape consumer AI products
