About this role
OpenAI is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead motor development for advanced robotic systems, owning stator and rotor designs from concept through prototype validation. You'll design critical motor components like laminations and bobbins, build and debug prototypes, and establish repeatable low-volume production processes while collaborating across electromagnetics, electrical, manufacturing, and test teams.
What you'll do
- Own stator and rotor mechanical designs, CAD, drawings, tolerances, fits, and mechanical validation
- Develop laminations, stack assemblies, bobbins, and winding interfaces controlling alignment and conductor placement
- Design, fabricate, and debug fixtures for winding, assembly, alignment, and inspection
- Build and troubleshoot prototypes, using defects and measurements to iterate designs and processes
- Establish low-volume production with work instructions, revision control, traceability, and acceptance criteria
- Collaborate with electromagnetic, electrical, manufacturing, and test teams to balance performance and buildability
