OpenAI
Mechanical Engineer, Dynamometer and Actuator Testing Infrastructure
About this role
Join our Robotics team to design and build mechanical test infrastructure for robotic actuators. You'll own the full lifecycle of dynamometer test stands—from requirements and CAD through fabrication, assembly, and lab iteration—working closely with electrical, software, and controls engineers to create safe, precise, and reliable characterization systems.
What you'll do
- Design and own mechanical architecture of dynamometer test cells, including frames, load paths, alignment, guarding, and serviceability
- Design fixtures, couplings, shafts, bearings, and torque-reaction hardware for actuator testing across torque, speed, thermal, and durability scenarios
- Perform structural analysis and simulation for stiffness, strength, fatigue, vibration, and critical speed
- Build, assemble, align, and debug test stands in the lab using fabrication and measurement tools
- Develop modular fixturing and changeover strategies to support rapid testing of actuator variants without compromising measurement quality
- Manage fabrication partners and establish drawings, tolerances, assembly procedures, and preventive maintenance practices
What they're looking for
- Mechanical design and CAD (frames, fixtures, load paths, alignment)
- Rotating machinery and dynamometer design
- Structural analysis and FEA (stiffness, fatigue, vibration, thermal)
- Bearing, coupling, and shaft selection and design
- Precision fixturing and test stand development
- Hands-on fabrication, assembly, and instrumentation
- Cross-functional collaboration with electrical and software engineers
- Tolerance stack-up and mechanical safety design
