Mechanical Engineer, Hardware Systems

About this role

OpenAI seeks an experienced Mechanical Engineer to design and optimize mechanical and thermal systems for AI supercomputer hardware in data center environments. You'll lead design efforts from concept through production, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure reliability and performance of mission-critical infrastructure.

What you'll do

• Lead mechanical design for AI supercomputer products in data center applications
• Design and optimize thermal solutions for chips, power modules, and system-level cooling architectures
• Perform 3D modeling, FEA, tolerance analysis, and prototyping to ensure manufacturability
• Conduct mechanical testing including vibration, shock, and thermal cycling validation
• Develop specifications and test procedures; mentor suppliers and junior engineers
• Lead product launches and ensure compliance with quality standards and regulations
