About this role

OpenAI is seeking a Linux Kernel Operating Systems Engineer to design and maintain kernel subsystems for next-generation consumer AI devices. You'll own features across the full stack—from kernel to userspace—while collaborating with hardware and firmware teams to deliver reliable, production-ready products.

What you'll do

  • Design and implement Linux kernel subsystem changes for device capabilities and product requirements
  • Own complete features across kernel and userspace boundaries, building necessary interfaces and components
  • Debug system behavior using tracing, profiling, and diagnostic tools to resolve correctness, concurrency, performance, and reliability issues
  • Develop tests and workloads to validate performance, power, and reliability improvements and detect regressions
  • Partner with hardware, firmware, and application engineers to translate system requirements into maintainable solutions
  • Prepare reviewable patches and contribute fixes upstream while maintaining product-specific kernel changes
