Software Engineer, AI for Chip Design

San Francisco (Remote)$266k–$468kfulltimemidAdded 3 days ago

About this role

OpenAI seeks a Software Engineer to build infrastructure and tooling that enables AI models to design semiconductors. You'll integrate EDA tools, create reinforcement learning environments, and develop systems that help researchers optimize chip designs while maintaining correctness and measurable performance metrics.

What you'll do

  • Build and maintain RL infrastructure for chip-design experiments, evaluations, and long-running workflows
  • Integrate EDA tools into pipelines for RTL generation, verification, and physical design optimization
  • Debug failures across tools, services, and infrastructure while improving reliability and reproducibility
  • Develop tooling and model harnesses for rapid iteration and measurement of correctness, power, performance, and area
  • Collaborate with researchers to productionize successful experiments into reusable training systems
  • Own end-to-end ambiguous projects, communicate progress, and iterate based on results

What they're looking for

  • Software engineering fundamentals and reliable systems design
  • Full-stack debugging across distributed systems and unfamiliar codebases
  • Python, containerized tools, and reproducible development environments
  • Research infrastructure, experiment orchestration, or ML tooling
  • Reinforcement learning concepts and model evaluation workflows
  • RTL, Verilog/SystemVerilog, EDA tools, or chip-design automation
  • Independent project delivery and technical decision-making
  • Collaboration with researchers on evolving requirements

Likely interview questions

  • Describe a complex software system you've built end-to-end. What technical tradeoffs did you make between speed, correctness, and maintainability?
  • Tell us about a time you debugged failures across unfamiliar tools and services. How did you approach it?
