Menlo Park, CA$220k–$300kfulltimemidAdded 5 days ago

About this role

Periodic Labs seeks a Research Engineer to validate novel semiconductor materials by designing and fabricating short-loop test devices, from thin-film deposition through electrical characterization. You'll bridge materials science and device physics, working hands-on in the lab while supporting customer engagements and feeding insights into AI-driven materials discovery.

What you'll do

  • Design and build patterned device test vehicles using photolithography, laser direct-write, or e-beam lithography combined with deposition and metrology
  • Deposit engineered thin-film stacks with complex interfaces using PVD, PLD, MBE, and ALD/CVD techniques
  • Perform electrical characterization on probe stations and design custom measurement test benches for specialized needs
  • Connect material and interface properties to device performance, iterating on process and stack design
  • Support customer-facing work by translating requirements into experimental plans and presenting results
  • Document methodology, results, and learnings to build internal knowledge and AI training datasets

What they're looking for

  • Semiconductor device physics and integration flows
  • Lithography (photolithography, laser direct-write, e-beam)
  • Thin-film deposition techniques (PVD, PLD, MBE, ALD/CVD)
  • Electrical characterization and probe station measurement
  • Custom test bench design and assembly
  • Materials science and interface engineering
  • Condensed matter physics (preferred)
  • Emerging memory and logic device architectures (preferred)

Benefits

  • Equity compensation alongside base salary
  • Visa sponsorship and immigration support
  • Work at a well-funded AI and materials science company
  • Hands-on research role with direct impact on breakthrough materials
  • Collaborative environment bridging academia and industry

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a short-loop device you've fabricated end-to-end—from stack design through electrical measurement—and what you learned about material-to-device translation.
  • Describe your experience with [PVD/PLD/MBE/ALD] deposition. How do you ensure interface quality, and how has it affected device performance in your prior work?
