Forward Deployed Engineer

San Francisco office (Remote)$180k–$250kfulltimemidAdded yesterday

About this role

Plain seeks a Forward Deployed Engineer to work directly with strategic customers on custom implementations, system design, and migrations, while identifying which one-off work should become core product features. You'll own customer problems end-to-end and help the core team focus on the roadmap by taking on high-context, bespoke engineering work.

What you'll do

  • Work directly with customers to diagnose problems, scope solutions, and deliver implementations end-to-end
  • Design systems for customer deployments, balancing correctness, scale, and speed
  • Communicate technical plans and tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Collaborate with Sales, CX, Product, and core Engineering to convert learnings into product roadmap items
  • Determine which custom work should be generalized into product features versus remaining one-off
  • Help shape processes and best practices as the Forward Deployed function grows

What they're looking for

  • Full-stack development (React, TypeScript frontend and TypeScript/GraphQL backend)
  • System design and architectural decision-making
  • Rapid prototyping and iteration based on customer feedback
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management
  • Strong product sense and business judgment
  • AWS, Cloudflare, and cloud infrastructure knowledge
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal scaffolding
  • Customer empathy and conflict resolution under pressure
