Basic Function
As a part of the Civil & Structural Engineering Team within the Power Engineering Team at SB Energy, the Senior Civil Engineer will act as an owner’s engineer subject matter utility-scale solar power, energy storage projects, and high-voltage (HV) substation and transmission line projects as well as a reviewer and designer of development projects. Other tasks include projects with the Innovation team and supporting Operations & Maintenance activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support design and review of project access roads and required public-road improvements, including alignments, pavement, drainage and construction access, in coordination with project teams, EPC contractors and consultants.
- Coordinate with EORs, Departments of Transportation (DOTs), counties and local agencies on project access, roadway permits and related design reviews. Manage technical submittals and review comments, engaging traffic or roadway specialists as needed.
- Support civil design for PV and BESS sites, substation and HV yards, and transmission-line facilities and work areas. Coordinate equipment pads, foundation interfaces, trenching and drainage with electrical, structural and geotechnical specialists.
- Serve as a civil engineering resource for Development, Construction and other internal teams. Develop consultant scopes, evaluate proposals and manage engineering deliverables, budgets and schedules.
- Lead milestone and issued-for-construction design reviews with EPC contractors and internal teams. Resolve constructability issues, technical risks and review comments, and coordinate internal approvals.
- Perform and review grading, earthwork, drainage, culvert, stormwater and erosion-control designs. Evaluate hydrologic and hydraulic studies, flood exposure and effects on adjacent properties and infrastructure.
- Prepare exhibits and quantity estimates, evaluate change proposals and conduct value engineering to improve constructability, cost-effectiveness, code compliance, performance and reliability.
- Conduct site feasibility studies and review topographic surveys, hydrology, environmental and geotechnical reports to assess land suitability, evaluate compliance with applicable engineering standards, and identify design and construction constraints.
- Develop and maintain civil engineering design standards, review procedures and internal tools to improve design quality, consistency and review efficiency. Share lessons learned and mentor engineers.
- Support Procurement with technical evaluations of civil materials, equipment and service providers, including vendor qualifications and compliance with project specifications.
- Support construction through site visits, RFIs, submittals and nonconformance resolution. Review closeout documents and provide technical support and troubleshooting to O&M for civil infrastructure, drainage and erosion issues.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Minimum eight (8) years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience in site development, infrastructure or energy projects, including design review and construction support.
- BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program and an active U.S. PE license, with ability to obtain project-state licensure as needed. A master's degree is a plus.

- Experience managing engineering consultants and coordinating with EPC contractors, utilities and cross-functional teams on design, permitting and construction issues.
- Strong grading, earthwork, drainage and stormwater design skills, including hydrologic and hydraulic review, culvert sizing, floodplain evaluation, erosion control and quantity estimating.
- Experience with utility-scale PV, BESS, substations, HV or transmission civil work is preferred, with the ability to support civil engineering across these facilities.
- Working knowledge of surveys, easements, geotechnical reports, pavement recommendations and soil behavior, with the judgment to engage specialists for complex conditions.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil site design, including grading, earthwork and access roads. Experience with corridor modeling is preferred.
- Experience with ArcGIS is preferred.
- Clear written and verbal communication, sound technical judgment and ability to manage concurrent project priorities.
