Mechanical Engineer (Starship Avionics)

Starbase, TXmidAdded yesterday

About this role

SpaceX seeks a Mechanical Engineer for the Starship Avionics team to design and analyze mechanical packaging solutions for avionics systems that withstand extreme launch environments while maintaining high reliability, low mass, and cost efficiency. The role involves thermal and structural analysis, CAD/FEA modeling, design optimization for manufacturability, and end-to-end hardware delivery from concept through integration.

What you'll do

  • Design mechanical packaging and enclosure solutions for electro-mechanical avionics assemblies
  • Perform thermal, structural, and tolerance analysis using hand calculations and finite element analysis
  • Create 3D models, production drawings, and maintain design documentation throughout development
  • Conduct failure analysis related to thermal loads, vibration, and shock conditions
  • Collaborate with manufacturing partners and production teams to ensure designs meet producibility goals
  • Lead design reviews and own hardware delivery timeline from inception through test and integration

What they're looking for

  • CAD software (modeling and documentation)
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for thermal and structural studies
  • Hand calculations for mechanical design verification
  • GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
  • Design for manufacturability and high-volume production
  • Vibration and shock environment design
  • Fatigue and thermal testing knowledge
  • PCB layout and integration fundamentals
