SpaceX
Mechanical Engineer - Tooling/Controls, Satellites (Starlink)
About this role
SpaceX is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to design and build high-rate production tooling for Starlink optical fiber connections. You'll own the complete electromechanical system—from custom machinery design through controls implementation and factory floor commissioning—enabling mission-critical satellite hardware manufacturing at scale.
What you'll do
- Design and develop custom tooling, fixtures, and automation equipment for optical fiber harness termination and assembly
- Own the full electromechanical stack including structure, motion systems, sensors, actuators, and machine controls from concept to production
- Drive projects through their complete lifecycle: concept development, fabrication, controls commissioning, and production introduction
- Solve complex manufacturing challenges around precision alignment, process repeatability, cycle time, and first-pass yield
- Assemble, wire, program, debug, and commission equipment on the production floor
- Collaborate with flight harness engineers, quality, and production teams to develop processes and equipment in parallel
What they're looking for
- 3D CAD design and 2D technical drawing
- Mechanical systems design and analysis
- PLC programming and industrial motion control
- Electromechanical systems (motors, actuators, linear rails, pneumatics, sensors)
- GD&T and drafting standards
- Manufacturing process knowledge (CNC, mills, lathes, welding, sheet metal)
- Precision assembly and tolerance optimization
- Hands-on fabrication and commissioning experience
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage
- 401(k) retirement plan with company match potential
- Company stock or long-term cash awards and employee stock purchase plan
- 3 weeks paid vacation and 10+ paid holidays annually
