SpaceX
Process Engineer (Starship)
About this role
SpaceX seeks a Process Engineer to develop and optimize manufacturing procedures for Starship, focusing on build reliability, quality assurance, and production scalability. You'll design processes, tooling, and inspection procedures while collaborating across disciplines to improve design-for-manufacturability and manage vehicle risk.
What you'll do
- Develop manufacturing, assembly, welding, NDE, and checkout processes from concept through enforcement across work centers
- Design tooling for work access, testing, fixturing, lifting, rigging, and fluid systems
- Define inspection requirements and create training documentation for production and quality processes
- Analyze build quality issues, drive corrective actions, and contain non-conforming hardware risks
- Partner with design teams to improve DFM and resolve incompatibilities between design intent and production rates
- Establish data collection and visualization systems to maintain quality at increasing production volumes
What they're looking for
- Manufacturing and assembly process design
- Tooling and fixture design
- NDT (penetrant, x-ray, EMAT) and welding knowledge
- 3D CAD software (NX, SolidWorks, CATIA)
- Data visualization and SQL/Power BI
- Design for manufacturability (DFM)
- Metallic manufacturing techniques (machining, forming, casting, fastening)
- Cross-functional collaboration and communication

Likely interview questions
- Describe a time you designed or optimized a manufacturing process from scratch—what challenges did you face and how did you validate your approach?
- How would you handle a situation where design requirements conflict with production rate capabilities?
