Solar Cell Quality Engineer (Starlink)

Bastrop, TXmidAdded today

About this role

SpaceX is hiring a Solar Cell Quality Engineer for the Starlink program in Bastrop, TX to oversee quality control of heterojunction solar cell manufacturing. You'll manage inline and offline metrology, define test methods and acceptance criteria, and ensure zero defects escape to space-bound satellites.

What you'll do

  • Own solar cell fab quality and prevent escapes to downstream assembly, integration, and flight operations
  • Manage inline and offline metrology systems including I-V testers, EL/PL, ellipsometry, SEM/EDS, and related inspection equipment
  • Define test methods, sampling frequency, acceptance criteria, and reaction plans for in-process and end-of-line measurements
  • Establish sorter binning logic, bin definitions, grade gates, and retest/hold-release rules
  • Build statistical process control, specification limits, and out-of-control action plans to catch yield and reliability risks
  • Lead root cause analysis on quality escapes and metrology failures using electrical, optical, and mechanical characterization

What they're looking for

  • Solar cell or PV module quality and metrology
  • Statistical process control and measurement systems analysis (MSA/GR&R)
  • Data analysis (Python, MATLAB, JMP, or R)
  • I-V characterization and EL/PL inspection techniques
  • High-volume manufacturing quality engineering
  • Test method definition and specification limit setting
  • Semiconductor or thin-film device manufacturing experience
  • Root cause analysis and failure investigation

Likely interview questions

  • Describe your experience with inline and offline metrology systems in a manufacturing environment—which techniques have you hands-on experience with?
  • Walk us through how you would define sampling frequency and acceptance criteria for a new solar cell test method; what data would you use to justify your plan?
