About this role
SpaceX seeks an optical engineer to develop cutting-edge free-space laser communication systems for Starlink satellites. You'll design, validate, and test advanced optical terminals while collaborating across disciplines to deliver mission-critical space technology.
What you'll do
- Design and validate free-space optical systems using optics and photonics expertise
- Lead optical architecture definition through trade studies, concept of operations, and risk reduction testing
- Conduct verification and field testing including environmental qualification and anomaly investigation
- Maintain link budgets, specifications, and collaborate with manufacturing on design feasibility
- Interface with software teams to develop automated optical testing tools and protocols
- Represent laser communications systems in reliability and risk discussions with stakeholders
