About this role
SpaceX seeks a Welding Automation Engineer to design and deploy automated welding systems for Raptor engine combustion chambers and nozzles—complex, reusable rocket components requiring precision in thin-walled alloys and regenerative cooling channels. You'll optimize welding processes, implement real-time monitoring and data pipelines, and collaborate across propulsion and manufacturing teams to scale production while maintaining quality and enabling rapid iteration.
What you'll do
- Develop and iteratively improve automated welding systems for Raptor chambers and nozzles using arc and beam welding processes
- Design optimized weld paths, parameters, and sequences for complex regenerative cooling geometries
- Implement real-time process control with sensors monitoring arc, temperature, seam tracking, and penetration
- Build data pipelines capturing manufacturing telemetry for statistical process control and machine learning-driven defect reduction
- Design fixtures and material handling solutions for high-precision welding across varied forms and materials
- Partner with propulsion, materials, and production teams to convert designs into scalable, manufacturable processes
