Starbase, TXmidAdded 4 days ago

About this role

SpaceX seeks a Welding Engineer to develop, qualify, and optimize welding processes for Starship launch vehicles. You'll collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to improve welded assemblies, manage production operations, and implement advanced welding technologies in a fast-paced environment.

What you'll do

  • Develop and qualify weld processes across multiple techniques including electron beam, laser beam, GTAW, orbital tube, resistance, GMAW, friction stir, and plasma arc welding
  • Support full-scale production operations and provide technical direction to manufacturing engineers and welders
  • Conduct root cause analysis and work with design, tooling, and automation teams to improve welded designs
  • Set up and interpret welding qualification tests, mechanical testing, and NDE results
  • Collaborate with NDE personnel to assess weld quality and develop innovative inspection techniques
  • Implement automated welding solutions and evaluate new welding technologies to enhance rate, quality, and efficiency

What they're looking for

  • Welding process development and optimization (electron beam, laser, GTAW, GMAW, plasma arc, friction stir)
  • Hands-on experience with stainless steel, nickel-based, titanium, copper, and aluminum alloys
  • Weld strength testing and ASTM/AWS standards knowledge
  • Root cause analysis and fractography/metallography
  • Robot programming for automated welding
  • Tooling design for welded assemblies
  • NDE interpretation and mechanical testing
  • Cross-functional communication and multi-tasking

Likely interview questions

  • Describe your experience optimizing welding parameters for different material alloys and which processes you've worked with most extensively.
  • Walk us through a time when you performed root cause analysis on a weld defect—what techniques did you use and what corrective actions did you implement?
