About this role
Starburst is hiring an AI Agent Engineer to design and ship production-grade agentic systems that enable natural language querying over enterprise data. You'll own agent architecture, reliability, and evaluation end-to-end, working with real-world messy data and driving measurable improvements in task completion and accuracy.
What you'll do
- Design and build agent architectures including tool orchestration, planning, memory, and multi-step reasoning
- Ship production-quality agent features with full ownership from design through deployment
- Handle real-world data challenges: partial schemas, inconsistent metadata, mixed formats, and unreliable systems
- Build evaluation suites to catch hallucinations, regressions, and grounding gaps before users encounter them
- Introduce and implement proven patterns for agent reliability: error handling, fallback chains, observability, guardrails
- Collaborate with AI Research Engineer to integrate grounding and retrieval into agent workflows

- Agent framework development (LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, Semantic Kernel)
- Production RAG pipeline design (chunking, vector databases, embeddings, reranking)
- LLM systems and function calling patterns
- Software engineering fundamentals (testing, observability, CI/CD)
- Enterprise data systems (SQL engines, data catalogs, schema metadata)
- Evaluation and observability pipeline design
- Error handling and system reliability patterns
- Context window and prompt optimization
