About this role
Join Ai2's Climate Modeling team as a Research Engineer to develop NeuralGCM+, an AI-first hybrid climate model that improves forecast accuracy beyond current physics-based approaches. Over three years, you'll adapt machine learning training pipelines, integrate ocean models, and support the climate science community in adopting this open-source tool.
What you'll do
- Adapt NeuralGCM training pipeline to run efficiently on Google Cloud and NVIDIA GPUs, transitioning from TPU-based JAX implementation
- Document and distribute training code via GitHub, ensuring accessibility for broader climate modeling community
- Design and test coupling strategies between NeuralGCM and ML-based ocean models
- Conduct code reviews, participate in design discussions, and collaborate with external research partners
- Develop and deliver tutorials on NeuralGCM+ to user groups and interested researchers
- Implement and validate approaches to improve model skill in previously unseen climate scenarios
