Avionics Mechanical Design Engineer
About this role
Vast is hiring an Avionics Mechanical Design Engineer in Long Beach to develop mechanical systems for next-generation commercial space stations. You'll design ruggedized avionics enclosures, conduct thermal and structural analyses, and collaborate with electrical engineering teams to deliver flight-critical hardware for human-rated spacecraft.
What you'll do
- Design avionics enclosures and mounting solutions for harsh space environments with high reliability standards
- Conduct thermal and structural analyses on avionics systems using simulation and testing
- Collaborate with electrical engineering to develop rugged PCB systems and review schematics
- Create engineering drawings, assembly instructions, and manage product configuration throughout lifecycle
- Plan and execute environmental testing, review data, and manage qualification of avionics products
- Support electronics development, trade studies, and interface definition documents for mission-critical components

- 3D CAD modeling (NX preferred)
- GD&T implementation and geometric dimensioning per ASME Y14.5
- Electronics packaging design for extreme environments
- Thermal and structural analysis (ANSYS or equivalent)
- Environmental testing standards (SMC-S-016, MIL-STD-810)
- IPC-A-610 and circuit card design standards
- Electrical schematic review and capture software (Altium)
- Mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering fundamentals
