Controls Engineer
About this role
Vulcan Elements seeks a Controls Engineer to lead industrial automation systems for a major rare-earth magnet manufacturing facility expansion in North Carolina. You will manage PLC programming, robotics integration, SCADA connectivity, and equipment commissioning across a 1 million square foot facility, with ownership spanning design through sustained operations and frequent travel to OEM factory acceptance tests.
What you'll do
- Execute hands-on PLC programming, debugging, and commissioning for Siemens and Allen-Bradley/Rockwell systems
- Design and integrate robotics, conveyors, motion control systems, servos, and VFDs for production operations
- Configure SCADA/MES connectivity, tag mapping, alarming, and data acquisition to site platforms
- Review vendor electrical schematics and control architectures; participate in Factory and Site Acceptance Tests
- Troubleshoot complex automation issues involving networks, hardware, and control logic
- Provide sustaining technical support and serve as escalation point for production automation problems
