Waymo
Perception Machine Learning Engineer - Continuous Learning
About this role
Waymo seeks a Perception Machine Learning Engineer to design automated systems that continuously improve autonomous driving models through active learning and intelligent data curation. You'll bridge model architecture and large-scale data infrastructure, managing the full lifecycle of fleet-generated sensor data to keep perception systems adapting to real-world complexity.
What you'll do
- Design and scale data pipelines to mine, ingest, and manage massive sensor data volumes from the autonomous fleet
- Deploy active learning algorithms to identify and select high-impact training data for continuous model adaptation
- Develop evaluation methods and ground-truth-free metrics to detect model regressions and ensure real-world performance
- Conduct large-scale experiments on data balancing, subset selection, and label quality to optimize training efficiency
- Build mining and evaluation pipelines for rare, safety-critical edge-case scenarios
- Leverage uncertainty estimation and embedding analysis to guide automated data acquisition and uncover model blind spots
What they're looking for
- Active learning in production environments
- Large-scale ML data pipeline construction (mining, extraction, auto-labeling, ingestion)
- Data curation and core set selection strategies
- Python and deep learning frameworks (PyTorch or JAX)
- Production-grade software engineering and code quality
- Computer vision and perception systems
- Uncertainty estimation and model confidence analysis
- C++ (preferred)
Benefits
- Discretionary annual bonus program
- Equity incentive plan participation
- Generous company benefits program
- Hybrid work arrangement
- Opportunity to shape autonomous driving technology
- Collaborative cross-functional environment
