Find where to insert a value in a sorted array — LINE uses this to gauge whether you spot binary search opportunities in sorted message-timestamp lookups.

Problem

Given a sorted array of distinct integers and a target value, return the index if found. Otherwise return the index where it would be if inserted in order, in O(log n).

Constraints

  • 1 <= nums.length <= 10^4
  • nums has distinct values, sorted ascending.

Approaches

1. Linear scan

Walk left to right until nums[i] >= target.

2. Binary search lower bound

Classic lower-bound binary search; lo ends up at the insertion index.

LINE-specific tips

LINE values precision — use lo < hi and hi = nums.length, not nums.length-1, and be ready to defend why; sloppy bounds are the #1 reject signal here.
