Problem
Given an array of integers nums and an integer target, return indices of the two numbers such that they add up to target. You may assume each input has exactly one solution and you may not use the same element twice.
Constraints
2 <= nums.length <= 10^4-10^9 <= nums[i] <= 10^9Only one valid answer exists
Examples
Example 1
nums = [2,7,11,15], target = 9[0,1]Example 2
nums = [3,2,4], target = 6[1,2]Approaches
1. Brute force
Try every pair of indices.
- Time
- O(n^2)
- Space
- O(1)
for (let i=0;i<nums.length;i++)
for (let j=i+1;j<nums.length;j++)
if (nums[i]+nums[j]===target) return [i,j];Tradeoff:
2. Hash map
Store each value with its index; for every new value check if target-value exists. Single pass.
- Time
- O(n)
- Space
- O(n)
function twoSum(nums, target) {
const seen = new Map();
for (let i = 0; i < nums.length; i++) {
const need = target - nums[i];
if (seen.has(need)) return [seen.get(need), i];
seen.set(nums[i], i);
}
return [];
