Software Engineer - Backend
About this role
Cardless is seeking a Backend Engineer to build and scale the financial infrastructure powering branded credit card programs for major companies. You'll work across diverse backend systems handling applications, ledgers, transactions, and partner APIs while owning projects from design through production in a regulated fintech environment.
What you'll do
- Design and build backend systems that process payments, make credit decisions, and support hundreds of thousands of cardholders
- Own projects end-to-end: scoping, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing operations
- Work across multiple domains and services based on highest-value problems rather than staying within a single service
- Partner with product, risk, compliance, and operations teams to deliver solutions that meet regulatory requirements
- Improve system reliability, observability, and developer experience incrementally
- Help lay groundwork for new products and bring more financial infrastructure in-house

- Backend systems design and distributed systems
- Production service development and end-to-end project ownership
- Modern backend languages (Java, Python, or similar)
- APIs, databases, and infrastructure fundamentals
- Problem-solving with incomplete information and strong systems thinking
- Fintech/payments domain knowledge (bonus)
- Workflow orchestration or event streaming (bonus)
- Clear communication and attention to correctness
