FluidStack

Controls Engineer, Virtualized PLCs

Austin, TX$197k–$227kfulltimemidAdded today

About this role

Fluidstack is seeking a Controls Engineer to architect and implement a virtualized PLC platform that transitions control logic from hardware appliances to software-defined infrastructure. You'll engineer the platform, validate control applications on virtual runtimes, build comprehensive test harnesses, and define reference architectures for networked, redundant controls—working on critical infrastructure that powers AI compute facilities.

What you'll do

  • Design and engineer the virtualized PLC platform architecture and software-defined control infrastructure
  • Port and validate existing control applications onto virtual runtimes while maintaining determinism and safety guarantees
  • Create test harnesses and validation frameworks that prove virtual controls match hardware behavior before deployment
  • Define reference architecture for networking, redundancy, and failover mechanisms in software-based controls
  • Ensure control logic and safety systems function reliably in virtualized environments at scale
  • Document control narratives for both engineering teams and operational staff

What they're looking for

  • PLC programming and IEC 61131-3 languages (Structured Text, Ladder Logic, etc.)
  • Industrial control systems and SCADA applications
  • Virtualization platforms and software-based control runtimes
  • Real-time systems and deterministic control logic
  • Safety-critical systems testing and validation
  • Codesys or equivalent software PLC platforms
  • Real-time Linux and hypervisor technologies
  • Building Management Systems (BMS) or Energy Management Systems (EPMS)

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a complex PLC application you've ported to a new platform—what determinism or timing challenges did you encounter and how did you solve them?
  • How would you approach validating that a virtualized control system behaves identically to its hardware-based predecessor in edge cases?
