About this role

GovWell is seeking a Payments Engineer to design and build the financial backbone of their AI-powered government services platform. You'll architect a ledger system handling real money with strict audit requirements, working directly with the CTO in a high-autonomy role shaping an entirely new domain.

What you'll do

  • Design and build an auditable, mathematically consistent ledger system for municipal financial transactions
  • Develop precise fee calculation and payment processing systems replacing manual government workflows
  • Architect support for partial payments, deposits, and refunds as core platform features
  • Lead migration of payment systems from legacy platforms to new infrastructure without service disruption
  • Partner with finance teams and municipal staff to ensure system reliability and compliance
  • Establish technical standards and best practices for financial systems across the engineering team
