About this role

Join Inversion's Accurate Landing Team as a Mechanical Design Engineer I to develop precision landing systems for hypersonic reentry vehicles. You'll design mechanisms for parachute deployment and control actuation, lead drop test campaigns, and drive hardware from concept through fabrication in a fast-paced aerospace startup environment.

What you'll do

  • Design mechanical systems and mechanisms for accurate landing of next-generation reentry vehicles
  • Lead development of parachute deployment, control actuation, and drop test structures
  • Conduct aerial drop tests and environmental testing (vibration, shock, thermal) to qualify designs
  • Support prototype integration, fit checks, and hands-on issue resolution during builds
  • Execute design trades balancing performance, manufacturability, schedule, and cost
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers, and vendors to source parts and accelerate development

What they're looking for

  • Mechanical design and CAD (Siemens NX or equivalent)
  • Hand calculations and fundamental mechanics analysis
  • GD&T and engineering drawing standards (ASME Y14.5)
  • Hardware development from concept through integration
  • FEA software (ANSYS, NASTRAN, FEMAP preferred)
  • Aerospace systems and structures knowledge
  • Communication and cross-functional collaboration
  • Rapid prototyping and fast-paced problem solving

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary ($77,000-$116,000 in California)
  • Work on cutting-edge space technology and hypersonic systems
  • Backed by leading investors including Y Combinator and Lockheed Martin Ventures
  • Direct impact on national security and commercial space logistics
  • Hands-on engineering environment with hardware-rich development
  • Opportunity to partner with U.S. Space Force and NASA
