Actuator Electromagnetic Design Engineer

San Francisco$266k–$380kfulltimemidAdded 5 days ago

About this role

Lead the design and development of custom electromechanical actuators for advanced robotic systems, from concept through prototype validation and production. You'll own the full engineering lifecycle—architecture, simulation, integration, and testing—while collaborating across mechanical, electrical, controls, and manufacturing teams to deliver high-performance actuators for next-generation robotics.

What you'll do

  • Design and architect custom robotic actuators including motors, transmissions, sensing, and thermal systems
  • Conduct system-level trade studies on torque density, bandwidth, efficiency, thermal performance, and manufacturability
  • Build and validate prototypes through hands-on bring-up, debugging, and iterative refinement
  • Develop test methodologies and characterization infrastructure for performance and reliability validation
  • Partner with controls, firmware, and robotics teams to optimize closed-loop actuator performance
  • Support transition from prototype to production-ready designs through DFM, DFA, and supplier collaboration

What they're looking for

  • Electromagnetic systems and motor design
  • Electromechanical assembly and precision tolerance analysis
  • Actuator architecture and systems-level trade-offs
  • Prototype development and hands-on hardware testing
  • Thermal analysis and management
  • CAD and simulation tools
  • Cross-functional collaboration and communication
  • Manufacturing and design for manufacturability (DFM)

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a custom actuator or electromagnetic system you designed—what were the key performance trade-offs you had to balance?
  • How do you approach integrating a newly designed actuator into a larger robotic system, and what cross-functional collaboration is critical?
