Data Engineer, CPU & Storage

San Francisco$293k–$385kfulltimemidAdded today

About this role

OpenAI seeks a Data Engineer to build software integrations and data systems connecting CPU, storage, and infrastructure platforms across internal and vendor systems. The role bridges data engineering and backend software engineering, requiring you to design reliable mechanisms for collecting, normalizing, and making infrastructure data accessible across heterogeneous environments.

What you'll do

  • Build and maintain software integrations collecting CPU, storage, capacity, and operational data from internal systems and external vendors
  • Design reliable ingestion mechanisms for structured and semi-structured infrastructure data through batch, scheduled, and API-driven workflows
  • Determine appropriate architectures and execution environments for data integrations across backend services, orchestration frameworks, and custom services
  • Build backend services and jobs that normalize infrastructure data and expose it through databases and analytical datasets
  • Design data models reconciling information across multiple systems to establish consistent representations of capacity, inventory, and utilization
  • Develop detection and resolution mechanisms for missing, stale, inconsistent, or incorrect infrastructure data across source systems

What they're looking for

  • Python programming and production software development
  • SQL and relational database experience with large operational datasets
  • Data integration and ETL pipeline design
  • Backend and infrastructure software engineering
  • API design and integration across heterogeneous systems
  • Data modeling and schema design
  • Monitoring, logging, and observability
  • Cloud and on-premises infrastructure systems

Likely interview questions

  • Describe your experience building data integrations across multiple heterogeneous systems—what challenges did you face reconciling conflicting data representations?
  • How do you approach designing data models when source systems have conflicting definitions of the same concept, like capacity or utilization?
