About this role

OpenAI's Robotics team seeks a Senior Harness Engineer to design and integrate custom wire harnesses and flexible printed circuits for advanced robotic systems. You'll lead the full engineering lifecycle from architecture through production, collaborating across mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing teams to build scalable, high-performance electromechanical solutions.

What you'll do

  • Lead architecture, design, and integration of custom wire harnesses and flexible printed circuits (FPC)
  • Build and validate prototypes through hands-on bring-up, debugging, and iterative refinement
  • Develop test methodologies and characterization infrastructure for harness performance, reliability, and durability
  • Analyze test data to identify failure modes and drive design improvements
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and suppliers to transition designs from prototype to production
  • Establish engineering standards, integration practices, and development workflows for future platforms

What they're looking for

  • Wire harness and FPC design and integration
  • Connector selection and electromechanical design
  • CAD and PLM tools (NX, Teamcenter, or equivalent)
  • Validation planning, reliability testing, and failure analysis
  • Prototype bring-up, debugging, and hardware instrumentation
  • Cross-functional collaboration and systems-level thinking
  • Production scaling and manufacturing knowledge
  • First-principles analysis and rapid prototyping

Benefits

  • Work on cutting-edge general-purpose robotics and AGI-level intelligence
  • In-office role with 4 days per week on-site in San Francisco
  • Relocation assistance provided
  • Hands-on hardware engineering with direct impact on robotic systems
  • Cross-functional collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and controls teams
  • Opportunity to establish engineering standards for future platforms
