Network Engineer
About this role
OpenAI seeks a Network Engineer to design, operate, and improve global networks spanning offices, labs, cloud environments, and devices. This role combines strategic platform engineering with hands-on production operations, requiring expertise in enterprise networking, security, automation, and cross-functional collaboration to support AI research and corporate infrastructure.
What you'll do
- Design and operate secure, scalable enterprise networks across offices, labs, campuses, cloud connectivity, and hybrid environments
- Define strategic direction through architecture, standards, roadmaps, lifecycle planning, and capacity strategy
- Own production operations including on-call, incident response, and time-sensitive delivery while protecting security and continuity
- Convert operational patterns into durable platforms and automation using Infrastructure-as-Code and safety standards
- Implement routing, switching, wireless, WAN, Internet edge, firewalls, NAC, and segmentation services
- Partner with security teams to enforce Zero Trust principles, least privilege access, and device identity controls
What they're looking for
- Enterprise network design and operations (Cisco IOS, Meraki, Palo Alto, Arista)
- Routing and switching fundamentals (BGP, OSPF, VLAN/VRF, WAN, high-availability)
- Network observability and monitoring (SNMP, syslog, NetFlow, ELK, Grafana)
- Network security (ACLs, firewalls, VPN, 802.1X/NAC, segmentation, Zero Trust)
- Infrastructure automation (Python, Go, Terraform, Ansible, APIs, Git, CI/CD)
- Production troubleshooting across packets, logs, telemetry, and physical infrastructure
- Enterprise wireless design and deployment
- Cloud and hybrid connectivity platforms
