About this role
OpenAI's Hardware team seeks a Physical Design Engineer to develop tools, flows, and methodologies for optimizing next-generation AI accelerator silicon. You'll own physical implementation from floorplanning through signoff, collaborating with RTL designers to achieve optimal power, performance, and area trade-offs.
What you'll do
- Develop and own physical design tools, flows, and methodologies for implementation
- Execute block-level physical implementation from floorplanning to final signoff
- Partner with RTL designers to define and optimize block implementation strategies
- Analyze and optimize designs for timing, power, and area convergence
- Collaborate with EDA vendors and ASIC partners on design optimization
- Drive improvements in team productivity and design quality

- Physical design and methodology development
- Block-level physical implementation and PPA optimization
- Python, Bazel, and TCL programming
- Physical design tools (synthesis, place-and-route, LEC, power estimation)
- Microarchitecture and RTL design understanding
- Timing closure and physical verification
- Silicon tapeout experience with complex designs
- Top-level design methodologies (bonus)
