Rack Power Engineer
About this role
OpenAI seeks a Rack Power Engineer to design, qualify, and manage power systems for AI supercomputers. You'll own rack power architecture from requirements through deployment, partnering across hardware, firmware, and operations teams to ensure reliable high-power delivery at scale.
What you'll do
- Design and qualify rack power architecture including shelves, rectifiers, PSUs, PMCs, and DC distribution systems
- Drive supplier development and review electrical designs, evaluating performance, cost, reliability, and trade-offs
- Define and execute comprehensive qualification plans covering transients, failover, thermal limits, and fault protection
- Partner with firmware teams to validate power management controllers, telemetry, sequencing, and fault handling
- Characterize rack power under AI workloads and establish fleet health metrics with operations teams
- Lead debugging of power failures, perform root-cause analysis, and drive corrective actions across hardware and firmware

- AC/DC power conversion and rectifier design
- Power delivery and distribution systems for data centers
- Power management controller (PMC) design and qualification
- Laboratory testing with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and electronic loads
- Firmware integration and communication protocols (PMBus, I²C, CAN, Ethernet)
- Python or similar tools for telemetry analysis and automation
- Cross-functional collaboration with electrical, mechanical, and thermal teams
- Safety, EMC, and reliability qualification standards
