Systems Integration Engineer, Build Systems | Consumer Devices
About this role
Join OpenAI's Systems Integration team to architect and evolve build systems and CI infrastructure for consumer device software. You'll own Bazel-based builds, Buildkite pipelines, remote caching, and developer tooling that enable rapid, reliable product launches across a fast-growing engineering organization.
What you'll do
- Own and evolve Bazel and Yocto build workflows, designing Starlark rules and toolchains for hermetic, reproducible builds
- Improve CI performance and reliability across Buildkite pipelines through optimization of queue time, build time, cache hit rates, and flake isolation
- Build systems for affected-target detection, dependency analysis, and intelligent test selection to reduce unnecessary CI work
- Operate and optimize build infrastructure including Docker/OCI images, Kubernetes runners, and remote cache/execution systems
- Instrument build and CI systems with metrics, logs, dashboards, and analytics to measure speed, reliability, and developer impact
- Partner with engineering teams to debug build issues, onboard projects, and remove systemic bottlenecks

- CI/CD pipeline architecture and optimization (Buildkite experience preferred)
- Distributed systems debugging and troubleshooting
- Kubernetes and container orchestration
- Infrastructure as code (Terraform)
- Python, Go, or systems programming languages
- Observability and telemetry systems design
- Developer tools and productivity engineering
