About this role
Toast is hiring a Software Engineer II to join their Payments team, which handles critical payment processing infrastructure for restaurants. You'll develop scalable microservices that power payment acceptance across multiple channels while processing millions of dollars in daily transactions.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and maintain high-performance microservices for payment processing infrastructure
- Collaborate with Product Managers and cross-functional teams on platform development
- Optimize backend systems for performance, scalability, and security
- Advocate for coding best practices and raise engineering standards across the team
- Leverage AI tools to enhance development workflow and improve velocity

- Kotlin and/or Java backend development
- Microservices architecture and containerization
- Backend architecture patterns (microservices, event-driven, monolithic)
- Unit, integration, and end-to-end testing
- AWS (DynamoDB, PostgreSQL preferred)

- Scalable and secure system design
- Payment systems (nice to have)
