Who Is Actually Hiring Early-Career Engineers in 2026: 1,232 Companies, Counted
A third of every early-career engineering opening on our board sits at twenty companies, and they are not the ones a careers fair prepares you for: space, defence, AI labs and hardware. Counted on 17 September 2026 across 10,780 live postings from 1,232 companies. The concentration has a cost — those twenty are 7.2% remote, against 17.1% for the board as a whole.

We can answer the second question, because we count them. Our job index reads postings from employer career pages through Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever, re-verifies them daily and retires the dead ones. On 17 September 2026 it held 10,780 live postings across 1,232 companies, and the board is early-career by construction — a posting is dropped at ingestion if its title carries a senior-level marker such as senior, staff, principal or lead.
So this is a count of who is advertising for people entering the field.

Note on the two unnamed rows: both are well-known frontier AI research labs, and both are model providers we will not name in an article, because a standing house rule keeps our own vendor stack out of public content. The counts are unchanged and unrounded; only the labels are withheld, and we would rather tell you that than quietly drop two rows and hand you a leaderboard with holes in it.
The top twenty companies account for 3,498 of 10,780 postings — 32.4% of the board.
The pattern is the finding, not the ranking. Space, defence, federal contracting, AI labs, hardware. Not the consumer-technology names that dominate careers-fair advice, and not the companies most new graduates have a referral into. A hiring wave is a period when one employer opens many similar roles at once, and several of the names above are in one right now; the same list three months from now will look different, which is why every number here carries the day it was counted.
The concentration has a remote cost

The biggest early-career employers on this board advertise remote work at less than half the rate of the board as a whole, and the single largest advertises none at all out of 824 openings. That is not surprising once you see who they are: you cannot integrate a satellite from your kitchen.
It does mean one thing clearly. If remote is a requirement rather than a preference, then sorting your search by hiring volume points you in exactly the wrong direction, and you should be working the long tail instead.

This is the half of the market that advice forgets. The long tail is the large number of employers with only one or two openings each, and it is where an application is most likely to be read by a person rather than filtered by volume. A company hiring one engineer is not running an automated first pass on ten thousand applicants.
The trade is real and worth naming: those roles are harder to find, they close faster, and each one is a separate research task. What you get back is a response rate that no high-volume employer can match — at a company hiring one engineer, a human reads the resume rather than an ATS keyword filter, and the loop is more likely to be a founder conversation than a standardised whiteboard round. The languages those roles ask for are the ordinary ones: Python, Java, JavaScript and SQL carry most early-career postings, with AWS and Kubernetes close behind on the infrastructure side.
The number we are not publishing
We are not going to tell you which of these companies is easiest to get hired at, because we cannot see a single outcome. We see postings appear and disappear. We do not see applications, interviews, offers or acceptances, and any "easiest companies to get into" list built from posting counts is fiction dressed as data.
What we can add from the same index: nearly a third of tech postings stay open more than 60 days, so a large posting count includes roles that have already failed to close once. A big number is a big number of doors, not a wider one.

- Live posting
- A listing still publicly visible on the employer's own careers page on the day we checked. Our index re-verifies daily and retires listings that disappear.
- Applicant tracking system (ATS)
- The software an employer posts and manages jobs through — Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever here. Postings are read from the employer's own ATS careers page, not from an aggregator that re-hosts them.
- Early-career filter
- The ingestion rule that drops any posting whose title carries a senior-level marker (senior, sr., staff, principal, lead, director, VP, head of), so the board carries roles a person entering the field can actually apply to.
- Hiring concentration
- The share of all openings held by the largest employers. Here, the top twenty companies hold 32.4% of the board.
What to do with this
- Build two lists, not one. High-volume employers for reach, the long tail for odds. A search that is only the first list is someone else's search.
- Read the eligibility line first. Several of the largest employers here are defence and space companies with work-authorisation or clearance requirements you cannot satisfy retroactively.
- Decide about remote on purpose. 7.2% at the top versus 17.1% overall is a structural fact, not bad luck.
- Apply to single-opening companies the week they post. One opening fills once.
- Rehearse the format, not the topic. High-volume employers standardise their loops — a phone screen, a coding round on a shared editor, sometimes a take-home, then an onsite with a system design and a behavioral interview — which makes them rehearsable in a way a boutique process is not. A phone screen is the first live technical conversation, usually 30 to 45 minutes, and at these employers it is the round that removes most candidates.
Method, and what it cannot tell you
Postings are read from employer careers pages through Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever, then re-verified daily. Every figure above counts the 10,780 postings live on 17 September 2026. Company names are the employer's own identity on their ATS board.
Four limitations, plainly:
- Early-career and US-eligible only. Senior-titled roles, non-engineering functions and roles outside US eligibility are excluded at ingestion. This is a view of one slice of hiring, on purpose. For economy-wide occupation data, the Occupational Outlook Handbook is the reference, and the monthly Employment Situation release carries the labour-market backdrop.
- Postings are not hires. We count what was advertised and still visible. A posting can be aspirational, duplicated across locations, or already effectively filled.
- Publishing behaviour skews the ranking. Companies that post many small, structured, individually-listed junior roles rank above companies that hire the same number through one generic requisition.
- This is one day. Counted 17 September 2026. We re-run it rather than leaving a stale leaderboard up.

- Much less than the market overall. Across the twenty largest employers on this board, 253 of 3,498 postings are flagged remote — 7.2%. Across all 10,780 postings the figure is 17.1%. The largest single employer in our index advertises zero remote openings out of 824. If remote work is a requirement rather than a preference, hiring volume is the wrong thing to steer your search by.
- Why are defence and space companies at the top of the list?
- Two reasons, and only one is about them. They are genuinely hiring engineers in volume in 2026. But our board also only carries early-career, US-eligible engineering roles — anything with senior, staff, principal or lead in the title is excluded at ingestion — and companies that publish large volumes of structured junior engineering listings are over-represented by construction. Read the list as who is advertising the most early-career openings where we can see them, not as a ranking of the largest employers.
- Does a big posting count mean a company is easy to get into?
- No. It means there are more doors, not wider ones. A company with 800 open roles also receives applications at that scale and usually runs an automated first pass. Our own data on posting duration shows that nearly a third of tech postings stay open past 60 days, so a large count includes roles that have already failed to close once. Volume tells you where to look; it tells you nothing about your odds.
