Problem

Given an integer array nums, return true if any value appears at least twice, otherwise return false.

Constraints

  • 1 <= nums.length <= 10^5
  • -10^9 <= nums[i] <= 10^9

Examples

Example 1

Input
nums = [1,2,3,1]
Output
true

Example 2

Input
nums = [1,2,3,4]
Output
false

Approaches

1. Brute force

Compare every pair.

Time
O(n^2)
Space
O(1)
for (let i = 0; i < nums.length; i++) {
  for (let j = i+1; j < nums.length; j++) {
    if (nums[i] === nums[j]) return true;
  }
}
return false;

2. Hash set scan

Add each value to a set; if already present, you've found a duplicate.

Time
O(n)
Space
O(n)
function containsDuplicate(nums) {
  const seen = new Set();
  for (const n of nums) {
    if (seen.has(n)) return true;
    seen.add(n);
  }
  return false;
}

Adyen-specific tips

Adyen interviewers connect this to idempotency-key deduplication — they want you to volunteer that the Set is exactly the in-memory shape behind their replay-safe payment intake.
