About this role
Allen Control Systems, a defense startup founded by former Navy engineers, seeks a Motor Drive Firmware Engineer to design real-time embedded firmware for precision motor control systems in autonomous platforms. You'll develop high-performance control algorithms and collaborate across electrical, mechanical, and systems teams in Austin, TX.
What you'll do
- Design and implement embedded C/C++ firmware for real-time motor control with high-frequency loops and control algorithms (PID, FOC)
- Collaborate with electrical engineers on motor control board bring-up, including debugging power stages and sensor systems
- Use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and power analyzers to validate performance and troubleshoot control issues
- Optimize firmware for latency, efficiency, and reliability in hardware-constrained environments
- Conduct lab and field testing to validate motor performance under real-world conditions
What they're looking for
- Embedded firmware development (C/C++)
- Real-time motor control and BLDC/PMSM motors
- Microcontroller experience (STM32, TI C2000, or similar)
- Hardware debugging tools (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, power analyzer)
- Field-Oriented Control (FOC) or advanced motor control techniques
- RTOS or bare-metal real-time firmware
- Power electronics and motor driver integration
- Mechanical systems integration with firmware
