Applied Intuition
System Safety Engineer, Mining/Industrial
About this role
Applied Intuition seeks a Systems Safety Engineer to develop and own safety cases for autonomous mining and industrial vehicles. You'll conduct hazard analysis, derive safety requirements for critical systems like braking and steering, and collaborate with engineering teams to ensure safe autonomous deployments.
What you'll do
- Develop and own machine-level safety cases for autonomous mining vehicle deployments
- Design hazard identification and risk assessment activities including HAZOP, FMEA, and functional failure analysis
- Derive Machine Safety Requirements for brake, steer, throttle, transmission, and emergency stop systems
- Identify safety gaps across sensing, compute, controls, hydraulics, and actuation subsystems
- Support validation strategies, field testing, and deployment sign-offs with customers and regulators
- Collaborate with systems, controls, autonomy, software, and hardware teams on safety implementation
What they're looking for
- ISO 26262 system safety standards (Part 4 and Part 6)
- HAZOP and FMEA methodologies
- Safety requirement derivation and risk assessment
- System-level safety analysis for electromechanical systems
- Knowledge of brake-by-wire, steer-by-wire, and autonomous control systems
- Cross-functional collaboration and technical communication
- Safety validation and verification planning
- Fault analysis and failure mode propagation assessment
Benefits
- Work on cutting-edge autonomous vehicle technology with a $15B company
- Primary 5-day in-office role with flexible scheduling options
- Opportunity to influence safety across automotive, defense, mining, and agriculture industries
- Collaboration with top global automakers and U.S. military
- Multiple global office locations

Likely interview questions
- Walk us through a specific safety case you've developed end-to-end for an autonomous or semi-autonomous system. What hazards did you identify, and how did you derive and verify the safety requirements?
- Describe your experience with ISO 26262 Part 4 or Part 6. Have you led system-level safety analyses, and what methodologies (HAZOP, FMEA, functional failure analysis) have you applied?
