Apptronik
Software Engineer Intern - ML Systems
About this role
Join Apptronik's ML Ops team as a 12-week intern working on robotics ML systems. You'll build data annotation tooling and optimize machine learning models for deployment on humanoid robots, bridging the gap between raw robot data and production-ready hardware.
What you'll do
- Design and implement data annotation tools for robot sensor data, trajectories, and task outcomes in MCAP and S3/MinIO formats
- Profile, quantize, and distill ML models to reduce inference latency and memory for robot hardware deployment
- Build evaluation harnesses to benchmark optimized models against baselines on hardware-relevant metrics
- Integrate annotation outputs and model artifacts with existing infrastructure including S3/MinIO, training pipelines, and Kubernetes
- Create documentation, runbooks, and example configurations for team adoption after the internship
What they're looking for
- Python for ML tooling and data pipelines
- Linux and development tools (Git, Docker, pytest, type hints)
- PyTorch or similar ML frameworks
- Model optimization (quantization, ONNX, TensorRT)
- Robotics fundamentals (kinematics, control, sensors, simulation)
- Data pipeline experience across annotation, training, and storage
- Reinforcement learning or vision-language-action models
- Data annotation workflows and labeling interfaces

Likely interview questions
- Walk us through a project where you optimized a machine learning model for deployment—what techniques did you use and what metrics improved?
- Describe your experience with robotics coursework or projects. Which simulation environments or tools have you worked with?
