Backend Engineer, Applied AI
About this role
Join Citizen as a Backend Engineer focused on Applied AI to own critical pieces of a real-time safety platform serving millions. You'll build AI-native infrastructure for incident detection and distribution while leveraging agents to multiply your engineering impact, working in a small, high-ownership team.
What you'll do
- Own and ship core components of the real-time incident pipeline (911 ingest, verification, geolocation, multi-million device distribution)
- Build and optimize live video infrastructure for incident capture and delivery at scale
- Integrate AI models and agents into the signal-to-incident pipeline with evaluation, guardrails, and staged autonomy gates
- Develop backend services for internal operator tooling (ProtectOS, Regulator) used by Mission Control
- Design and maintain enterprise API, MCP, and partner integrations for cities, hospitals, and security organizations
- Propose and implement AI agent workflows for code writing, testing, review, and operational tasks

- Backend systems design and distributed systems engineering
- Go and/or Python for production services
- Kubernetes and Google Cloud Platform (GKE, Pub/Sub)
- SQL databases (MySQL, Postgres) and BigQuery
- Real-time data processing and low-latency system optimization
- AI/ML integration and prompt engineering for agent workflows
- On-call operations and incident response
- API design and enterprise integrations
