Etched

Thermal Manufacturing Engineer

San JosefulltimemidAdded today

About this role

Etched seeks a Thermal Manufacturing Engineer to lead the development and scaling of liquid cooling cold plate manufacturing from prototype to high-volume production. You'll own process development for advanced fabrication methods like brazing, friction stir welding, and diffusion bonding, working directly with suppliers and internal teams to meet AI infrastructure demands.

What you'll do

  • Own end-to-end manufacturing engineering for cold plates and manifolds from NPI through mass production
  • Develop, qualify, and optimize cold plate fabrication processes including skiving, vacuum brazing, friction stir welding, and diffusion bonding
  • Define process parameters, controls, and acceptance criteria; establish capability benchmarks for yield, leak rate, and flatness
  • Lead process qualification at contract manufacturer sites; own PFMEA, control plans, and process validation documentation
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective action for manufacturing defects such as leaks, warpage, and delamination
  • Define and monitor manufacturing KPIs including yield, leak rate, cycle time, and cost per unit

What they're looking for

  • Cold plate fabrication processes (skiving, brazing, friction stir welding, diffusion bonding)
  • Aluminum and copper alloy metallurgy and material properties
  • Process capability analysis (Cpk, GR&R studies)
  • Leak testing, hydrostatic pressure testing, and thermal characterization
  • DFM/DFY design reviews for liquid cooling systems
  • PFMEA and control plan documentation
  • Root cause analysis and corrective action methodologies
  • Contract manufacturer management and supplier qualification

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a cold plate manufacturing defect you identified in production—what was the root cause and how did you resolve it?
  • Describe your experience qualifying a new cold plate manufacturing process or supplier. What capability metrics did you establish and validate?
